Terra boosts Winter Olympics viewership in Latin America
March 4, 2010 (Miami, FL) – Terra—a global digital media company and bilingual content producer—aired over 425 hours of live coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Offering free, simultaneous streaming on 15 online channels, Terra’s coverage proved comparable to the live online coverage offered by official carrier of the games NBC—approximately 400 hours—which for the first time restricted online viewing access to paying cable subscribers only.
Terra’s users responded: over 4.5 million unique visitors watched the games live on Terra, with a total of 16 million streamings and more than 29 million page views. Users shared their feedback on the games with more than 140,000 comments posted on various sections of the site. Hockey topped the charts with the most viewers, while curling coverage was an unexpected success according to user commentary and page views.
Prior to the 2010 games and Terra’s extensive coverage, the Winter Olympics were not well-known throughout Latin America. In the region, Terra was the sole provider of live, free coverage of the Games this year. In addition to live broadcasting of the games, Terra’s 24 hour coverage included video highlights, real-time photos, behind-the-scenes news and athlete interviews available both online and via mobile devices.
“Not limited to television schedules and carriers, Terra gave its audience the Olympic coverage they wanted to see, in real time,” Sandra Pecis, Director of Content, Terra. “Terra’s content, combined with our audience commentary, created the perfect blend of professional and user-generated content. It was a truly interactive experience.”
During the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Terra partnered with the International Olympic Committee as the exclusive broadcaster in Latin America. The 2008 games drove a record 22.756 million unique users to Terra.com
