Forward Alvaro Saborío continued his hot streak by scoring both goals in the 2:0 victory of Sion over BSC Young Boyz in the Swiss First Division…Deportivo Saprissa, home to ticos’ midfielder Alonso Solis, defender Victor Cordero, midfielder Walter Centeno, and forward Allan Alemán, captured the Costa Rican first division title after a win over LD Alajuelense.
CUBA
Currently on tour in Chile, the cubanos knocked off Chilean second division side Deportivo Temuco with a 2:1 win 13 May … Cuba lost 2:0 to Chile on 16 May in Temuco one week after falling 3:0 in Osorno … The cubanos will take on Mexico’s Pan-American team on 28 May as part of the Digicel Shield event in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.
EL SALVADOR
El Salvador will travel to Los Angeles on 28 May to begin training for their Group stage games in the Gold Cup. They may play against a local team in preparation for the regional tournament.
GUADELOUPE
Guadeloupe midfielder Jocelyn Angloma and defender Alain Vertot helped lead their local club Etoile de Morne-à-l'Eau to their sixth Division d’Honneur title and first since 2002. They took the top spot in the 2007 final standings with 79 Points following a 2:0 victory over Red Star on 12 May.
GUATEMALA
The chapines announced they will prepare for the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ with a friendly game against Chivas USA of Major League Soccer on 2 June at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California… Technical director Hernan Darío Gómez submitted his final roster of 23 players. The list includes defender Pablo Melgar (CD Antofagasta, Chile), midfielder Freddy Thompson (Comunicaciones, Guatemala), and forward Carlos ‘El Pescadito’ Ruiz (FC Dallas).
HAITI
Haiti will face Caribbean rivals Trinidad & Tobago in the Digicel Shield event on 28 May in Port of Spain, Trinidad. If Haiti wins it will face the winner of Cuba and Mexico’s Pan American team on 30 May in the championship match of the four team competition.
HONDURAS
The "catrachos" scheduled its fourth friendly game before it heads to the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ as they travel to play Venezuela in Merida on 25 May… Defender and Forward Luis Santamaria (CD Marathon, Honduras) was called by head coach Reinaldo Rueda to join the squad for the friendly.
MEXICO
Pavel Pardo and Ricardo Osorio of VFB Stuttgart are one victory away from being Bundesliga Champions after a 3:2 win over Bochum which placed the club at the top of the league with 67 points with only one game left in the season…Forward and recent Chicago Fire signing Cuauhtémoc Blanco led Club América to the semifinals of the current Torneo de Clausura in Mexico with two goals in a 4:1 victory over Atlas in the famed Estadio Azteca in México City. The teams had tied 3:3 in the opening leg.
PANAMA
Blas Pérez and his Colombian club team Cúcuta host Nacional of Uruguay in the Quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores…Panamá fell last week to neighbor Colombia 4:0 on 9 may at Rommel Fernández in Panama City.
TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
Trinidad & Tobago will host a four-team tournament entitled the "Digicel Shield" at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain later this month. Cuba, Haiti and the Mexico’s Pan American Team will join the hosts, Trinidad & Tobago at the event, which begins on 28 May. The two winners from 28 May will meet in the quadrangular final on 30 May, while the two losing teams will face off in the third-place game.
USA
The USA will play their final preparatory match on 2 June at San Jose’s Spartan Stadium against China…West Ham United, the club of defender Jonathan Spector, managed to avoid relegation with a 1:0 win over Manchester United this past Sunday at Old Trafford in Manchester, England.
