Guadaloupe makes history

Guadeloupe surprised Canada and won a very tight match 2-1 at the Orange Bowl in Miami Saturday night in first round play of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Angloma and Fleurival scored two goals from afar and the Canadians were unable to put a stop to the players from the Caribbean island.

09/JUN/2007- Even though Gerba set the provisional 1-1 during the first half, the team coached by Roger Salnot was at the top of his game and demonstrated they still have much to say in this Gold Cup.

Against Guadeloupe, Canada had the sole intention of winning their second game, which automatically would qualify them for the next round. In trying to achieve this, Coach Harp was surely going to make good use of the first game’s MVP Julian De Guzman, who showcased his talent in the game against Costa Rica and confirmed the great connection he shares with Dwayne De Rosario.

But it was, precisely, Jocelyn Angloma who got all the attention when, at the 10th minute, took a shot from about 35 yards that went over Greg Sutton.

Gudeloupe, again, was surprising the world by getting a head-start in this game.

Angloma’s teammates rushed him to celebrate this unexpected goal, and then returned to what they do best: defend firmly and without mistakes, and counterattack when given the chance.

But Canada did not want to just sit around and see how their chances of qualifying went away. Immediately after Angloma’s goal, Dwayne De Rosario tried to surprise Franck Grandel with a shot from the top of the box, but it went just inches away from Guadeloupe’s left post. De Rosario he kept trying to make his teammates come out of the haze in which Angloma’s goal had left them.

De Rosario’s efforts paid up dividends and, at the 31st minute, Canada was able to tie things up 1-1. Julian De Guzman found Ali Gerba completely alone inside the box and the Gothemborg forward had all the time in the world to bring down the ball and shoot without showing any mercy on Guadeloupe’s keeper.

The goal seemed to set things straight, on paper, but it did not change the way the events were unfolding on the pitch. Guadeloupe kept up their game, motivated by the great game both Capoue and Comminges were having until that point. Then, at the 37th minute, David Fleurival found a spot through the Canadian defense and took a long-range shot that surprised Sutton once again. The 2-1 was a totally unexpected reward for the Guadeloupean fans, who showed up to support their nation’s team at the Orange Bowl.
