Canada complains about the refereeing
Canada coach Stephen Hart said that his team was hurt by a decision by Mexican referee Armando Archundia, which eliminated them from Gold Cup in the semifinals.
21/JUN/2007 – With the game in stoppage time the referee called off a goal because of an offside by Atiba Hutchinson, which seemed onside. Canada lost to the U.S. 2-1 and said good bye to the tournament.
“If it goes off a player in the other team it can’t be offside”, stated Hart in the press conference. “I’m almost sure 22 (Onyewu) is the one that puts the ball in the box when we scored our goal”.
The Canadia coach was pleased with his team’s play. He highlighted their first half dominance but could not turn it into goals.
“We had control and generated a free kick that unfortunately hit the post and then we had another before their first goal, but at the end the reality is we could not score more goals”, he stated.
