Cuando una cantidad de peloteros con el suficiente poder se paran en el home a hacer swing de jonrón en cada lanzamiento, pueden suceder muchas cosas, las más comunes son: lograr la tan ansiada meta de conectar por encima de la barda y la antítesis, que falles los lanzamientos y te ponches.

Eso es lo que está sucediendo en Toronto, un equipo que ha logrado números impresionantes en cuadrangulares en estos dos meses de temporada, sus 76 vuelacercas lideran fácilmente todo el béisbol de grandes ligas, por encima de los 62 de Boston, y los ponen en proyección de ser el equipo con más cuadrangulares en los más de 100 años de pelota de liga mayor. De continuar como van, terminarían con 262 batazos de cuatro esquinas, un camino que los pondría muy cerca del record para todos los tiempos de 264 ostentado por los Marineros de Seattle desde 1997.

Los grandes swines también hacen que el contacto con la bola sea más difícil y la cantidad de ponches recibidos por Toronto también es impresionante, los dirigidos por Cito Gaston se han ponchado 384 veces y son primeros en la Americana y solamente son superados por los Cascabeles de Arizona, que han recibido 414 ponches y van camino a romper todos los records de las mayores. Las 384 veces que se han ponchados estos Azulejos les proyectan 1323 ponches al final de la campaña, esa cantidad los convertiría en el 6to, equipo en la historia con más ponches recibidos.

En Toronto nada ha cambiado, no tienen un nuevo parque con una potente corriente de viento, como los Yankees del 2009, no han recibido la ayuda de la liga, con algún cambio de reglamento y no contrataron a un grupo de los mejores sluggers del béisbol, solamente cambiaron de actitud en el plato. De la mano de su coach de bateo Dwane Murphy, quien no fue un eminente jonronero, sólo conectó 166 vuelacercas en 12 temporadas, los Azulejos le hacen swing grande a todo.

El primer cambio de actitud tiene que ver con una mayor agresividad en el plato, por lo que los Jays hacen una mayor cantidad de swings al primer lanzamiento que cualquier equipo de grandes ligas, con ello, según esta teoría, no permiten a los lanzadores sentirse cómodos en ningún turno. Claro que ellos tampoco pueden observar las fortalezas o debilidades del abridor contrario ese día, pero algo hay que pagar.

Lo cierto es que José Bautista (14), Vernon Wells (11) y Alex González (10) están entre los líderes en jonrones de la Americana y Joh Buck sorprende con sus 8 vuelacercas en 123 veces al bate, algo muy prominente para el receptor que tiene como tope 18 jonrones en una temporada y el electrizante paso de Edwin Encarnación que lleva 7 vuelacercas en apenas 53 turnos, es decir el dominicano se va para la calle una vez cada 7.5 turnos, esto sí que es una locura.

Más atrás siguen en la producción de jonrones Adan Lind con 7, Travis Snyder con 6 y Aaron Hill con 5. El segunda base está muy por debajo de sus números del 2009, bateando apenas para 156 de average, pero si se reencuentra y vuelve a ser el mismo del año pasado, podría volver a poner los 36 batazos de cuatro vueltas y ayudar en la búsqueda del record de jonrones para una franquicia en una temporada, digo si esto lo busca alguien en Toronto.

Lo cierto es que los conocedores los daban para pelear el último lugar de una de las más complejas divisiones del béisbol y los Azulejos, no les están dando la razón, al momento de escribir esta nota tienen record de 27-20 y son terceros en el Este de la Americana a 6 juegos de los asombrosos Rays de Tampa y poseen el 6to. mejor record de ganados y perdidos del béisbol, mucho tiene que ver su recién obtenido poder, pero también las tremendas actuaciones de Ricky Romero, Shaum Marcum, Brett Cecil, Cassey Jensen y Kevin Gregg, pero...eso es harina de otro costal.
