¿Qué le pasa a A-Rod que no llega a los 600 Jonrones?

Cuando comienzo esta columna diciendo que el manager más ganador de los noventas, que logró llevar a los Bravos a cinco campeonatos de la liga nacional y una serie mundial, mientras se llevaba 4 galardones al mejor manager del año y dirigía 5 juegos de estrellas, pasó toda su vida dedicado a enseñar, parecería una locura, pero no es así.

Cox tiene la virtud de de poder decir cosas de una manera en la que es sencillo entenderlo, por ellos la mayor parte de los jugadores que han jugado para él, le profesan un aprecio especial, muchos de ellos fueron mejores bajo su mando y algunos otros tocaron el Olimpo del beisbol bajo sus órdenes. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz y Chipper Jones fueron los más grandes exponentes de la filosofía Cox y podrían ser uno de los grupos más numerosos en ser exaltados al salón de la fama, tras haber pasado más de 10 temporadas con el mismo manager.

Cox es un hombre de caminar pausado, que sólo se exalta para protestar una jugada, más con la intención de cumplir con los establecido en el librito que por haberse molestado realmente. Su forma de hablar mirando directamente a los ojos, en lugar de asustar…tranquiliza, puede hacerte sentir como que están hablando con San Nicolás.

“Estamos jugando con todo para que se retire campeón, es un gran hombre, que me ha dado una gran oportunidad, con el que puedo hablar y siempre consigo las palabras correctas” comentó Martín Prado sobre el ganador de casi 2500 partidos como manager, cuatro más ganador de la historia de las mayores.

Por su parte Alex González nos dice “Yo soy parte del equipo, claro que quiero darle el regalo a Bobby Cox de estar en la postemporada, él es uno de los más grandes managers de la historia, para mí es un honor estar bajo su mando y quiero colaborar para que se retire muy en alto” en relación a su nuevo manager.

Chipper Jones no ha conocido otro manager en su ilustre carrera en grandes ligas, durante su trabajo juntos, el floridano tercera base, ha bateado 433 jonrones, con casi 2500 hits y casi 1500 carreras impulsadas, números que lo ponen cerca del salón de los inmortales, todo ello en complicidad con el maestro, el viejito bonachón de ojos azules que tiene una sonrisa para cada uno de sus “hijos” después de cada partido.

Bobby jugó en las mayores, muy poco, pero le valió para pasar su vida como manager, en dos temporadas consumió 629 turnos, conectó 141 hits con 9 jonrones y 58 impulsadas, dejando un promedio de bateo de 225 como segunda y tercera base para los Yankees de Nueva York en 1968 y 69.

A sus 69 años, Robert Joseph Cox se va del béisbol, pero su impronta quedará indeleble en quienes tuvimos la oportunidad de ver esta época del béisbol. Connie Mack y John McGraw en los años del béisbol romántico y Tony LaRussa, Joe Torre y Bobby Cox constituyen la quintaesencia del arte de dirigir hombres, estrellas y algunos niños mimados frente a millones de personas, 162 partidos al año.
