El ex toletero José Canseco dijo que declaró ante un jurado investigador el jueves que nunca vio a Roger Clemens utilizar esteroides, manteniendo así el apoyo que ha mostrado hacia el estelar pitcher desde el 2008.

El cubano Canseco, vestido con pantalones vaqueros, camisa negra y un saco oscuro con bordados de plata, describió su testimonio ante los periodistas tras las dos horas que pasó frente al jurado. Este ha estado escuchando a diversos testigos mientras analiza si acusará formalmente a Clemens por presuntamente mentirle al Congreso hace dos años, cuando negó haber utilizado esteroides o la hormona para el crecimiento humano.

Canseco sostuvo su apoyo al pitcher, diciendo una vez más que no hay evidencia de que Clemens utilizó sustancias para mejorar el desempeño.

"En ese entonces tenía mis sospechas en torno a muchos jugadores, porque (el uso de sustancias prohibidas) era tan rampante en el juego del béisbol", señaló. "Pero si ustedes me preguntan si yo tengo alguna evidencia sólida, si alguna vez inyecté a Roger Clemens o lo puse en contacto (con un vendedor de esos fármacos), o si él utilizó esteroides alguna vez... Nunca".

Indicó que en la sesión con el jurado le preguntaron en torno a su propio uso de esteroides, y también sobre los comentarios que algunos peloteros hicieron con relación al uso de sustancias prohibidas en el béisbol que están mencionados en su libro, "Juiced" (título que puede traducirse como "Intoxicados").

Canseco _que ya ha reconocido haber usado esteroides_ dijo que Clemens sabía que él los utilizaba, pero nunca le pidió que lo pusiera en contacto con los proveedores.

"Definitivamente hablé con Roger Clemens sobre esteroides al igual que con muchos otros jugadores, pero de lo que no hablamos es de Roger Clemens utilizando esteroides", señaló.

Canseco estuvo acompañado por su abogado Gary Holmes, del Raines Law Group en Beverly Hills, California. Las declaraciones del ex pelotero coinciden con lo que había afirmado anteriormente en una declaración jurada presentada en marzo del 2008.

Además, Canseco dijo que le mostraron una fotografía en la que aparecen él, Clemens y Brian McNamee en el Yankee Stadium. McNamee, el ex entrenador personal de Clemens y uno de los principales testigos, presentó su testimonio el 25 de mayo ante el jurado investigador.

En el Informe Mitchell del 2007, sobre uso de sustancias prohibidas en el béisbol, McNamee dijo que inyectó esteroides y hormona del crecimiento humano al ganador de 354 partidos cuando menos en 16 ocasiones. Clemens rechazó las acusaciones, y ambos repitieron sus afirmaciones contradictorias en una audiencia ante el Congreso en el 2008.

Canseco cuestionó la credibilidad de McNamee.

"Es un absoluto mentiroso. Lo reto a que me sometan a la prueba del polígrafo", afirmó. "Es su palabra contra la mía. ¿A quién le van a creer ustedes?"
