Si algún dueño de equipo en las mayores ha tenido influencia en la forma en la que se juega el béisbol de grandes ligas, ese ha sido “The Boss” (el jefe) George Steinbrenner.

El gran propietario de los Yankees de Nueva York, querido, por unos y odiado por otros, fue llamado “El Führer” por quienes se burlaban de él y su equipo llamado por todos los no yanquistas como “El Imperio del mal”, impulsó la agencia libre al extremo y convirtió a los Yankees en un equipo omnívoro que lo quiso todo, lo tuvo todo y lo logró todo bajo su manto.

Steinbrenner nació el 4 de Julio de 1930 en Rocky River, Ohio. Se graduó de Ingeniero e hizo un master en Educación Física, sus inicios en los negocios fueron en la empresa naviera de su familia.

Su inicio en el negocio del deporte fue en 1960 con los Cleveland Pipers de la desaparecida ABL y logró hacerlos campeones en la única temporada completa de esa liga.

Con la caída de la ABL, todos los propietarios perdieron dinero, aun así Steinbrenner le pagó a todos los acreedores, en los años subsiguientes.

Para 1973 la CBS era propietaria de los Yankees que no ganaban una Serie Mundial desde 1962, esta sequía de 11 años parecía inconcebible para una franquicia con los niveles de éxito de los Mulos.

Eso lo aprovechó George, para hacerse de los Yankees como cabeza de un consorcio que incluía al propietario de la fábrica de vehículos DeLorean, por la irrisoria suma de 8.8 millones de dólares.

La Modernización

A partir de allí se inició una modernización de la franquicia, comenzando por la reparación general del Yankee Stadium, firmó, en lo que fue considerado por muchos como el arranque de la agencia libre tal como la conocemos, a Jim “Catfish” Hunter.

Posteriormente firmaría a uno de los managers más polémicos de la historia del béisbol, Billy Martin y a Reggie Jackson, con lo que los Yankees volvieron a ser campeones en 1977, apenas 4 años después de la llegada del Jefe.

La relación entre Steinbrenner y Billy Martin fue tormentosa, el manager fue y vino en varias oportunidades, pero lograron obtener 4 banderines de la liga americana y tres series mundiales, con la dirección de antiguo segunda base. La década perdida

El mando de Steinbrenner también tiene el dudoso privilegio de ser la administración bajo la cual los Yankees tuvieron la única década en la que no ganaron ninguna serie mundial, esta fue la década de los 80’s del siglo XX.

Esta coincidió con la llegada de Don Mattingly al equipo, la mala suerte del súper estelar primera base es de antología, llegó a Manhatthan en 1982, un año después de que los Yankees obtuviesen su campeonato 33 de la liga americana y se fue en 1995, uno antes de que los Mulos se lo llevaran todo en la Serie Mundial de 1996.

La estadía de “Din Don” como le conocían en su época Yankee coincidió con una de las épocas más oscuras de la franquicia. Pero el punto culminante de la gestión de George Steinbrenner llega de la mano de Joe Torre, en sus años con los Mulos, la pareja Torre-Steinbrenner logró 6 campeonatos de la liga americana y cuatro campeonatos de Serie Mundial.

En el camino George le mostró al mundo que los campeonatos eran comprables y que el dinero podía crear dinastías en el béisbol, lo que otros pensaron imposible, haciendo del 31 de Julio una de las fechas más importantes en la pelota, porque era allí donde los Yankees solía asegurarse los campeonatos adquiriendo agentes libres que podían darles un impulso final sin importar el costo. Los Yankees siempre fueron la franquicia más importante del béisbol mayor, pero con Steinbrenner se convirtieron en un negocio multimillonario y en la franquicia más rica entre los deportes profesionales de los Estados Unidos, nunca hubo tanto interés de los anunciantes ni de la televisión como en la era Steinbrenner.

“The Boss” siempre supo que invertir produciría ganancias y fue esa su filosofía, nunca tuvo temor de comprar, al precio que fuese al mejor talento del béisbol y fue capaz de poner juntos a grandes estrellas que terminarían compitiendo por el cariño de la fanaticada e incluso por los millones provenientes de la publicidad, a tal punto que hemos visto en más de una oportunidad en una misma campaña publicitaria a dos de sus consentidos y máximos trofeos, Alex Rodríguez y Derek Jeter.
