Los niveles de sorpresa ya han sido pasados, la división oeste de la nacional tiene a 4 de sus 5 equipos jugando sobre 500 y los Padres son los líderes de la división con un record que solamente es superado por los Yankees y los Rays, colocándolos como los terceros mejores del béisbol y siguen jugando con la misma gente y en el mismo campo, aunque ya pasaron de ser un sorpresa para convertirse en una realidad.

Lo más asombroso de lo logrado hasta ahora por los californianos es que todo lo están haciendo con la segunda nómina más baja de las mayores, los Padres apenas se gastan 38.7 millones de dólares esta temporada y aun así tienen record por sobre 500 a mitad de temporada, esto sólo lo habían hecho en dos temporadas anteriores los sandieganos.

Su máxima estrella es Adrián González, un hombre callado, que parece estar enfocado en lo que hace 24 horas al día, su tranquilidad permanente es una de sus marcas de fábrica, junto a su poderoso bate que se ve minimizado por jugar en el parque más complejo para los bateadores. ¿Se imaginan a Adrian jugando en Yankee Stadium o en Fenwey? Pues muchos lo han hecho, pero no lo lograron, ahora “El Titán” no está en venta, porque los Padres están en la pelea.

Pero el que piense que estos Padres dependen en exclusiva de su cuarto bate está equivocado, elstaffa de lanzadores de San Diego es excepcional, son líderes en las mayores de efectividad (3.25), sino que su bullpen es también líder de las mayores con una envidiable efectividad de 2.91. Son segundos en efectividad de sus lanzadores (3.33) y segundo en efectividad en la carretera (3.67). Esta última estadística parece ser la más importante, porque sus lanzadores siempre han trabajado muy bien amparados por su reseco parque, pero hoy brillan en la visita y eso es un cambio importante que puede ser la causa de su excelente resultado.

Jon Garland 9-6 3.45, Clayton Richard 7-4 3.53 y Wade LeBlanc con un engañoso record de 4-7 a pesar de su excelente 3.30 de efectividad son parte de este sueño de san Diego, pero el mayor artífice de él es el novato de segundo año Mat Latos su descollante labor de 10-4 y su impresionante 2.45 de efectividad son base fundamental para este equipo que tenía rato sin ver una actuación de este estilo en ninguno de sus abridores.

Según Matt Stairs “Latos no puede esperar a que llegue el quito día para volver a lanzar. Probablemente le gustaría lanzar su apertura del día e irse al bullpen para relevar el resto de los partidos” y continuó comparándolo con uno de los mejores en su mejor momento “Me recuerda a Zack Greinke en cada cosa que hace”.

Si hay alguien divertido en el clubhouse de los padres ese es Heath Bell, el cerrador de los Padres es un joven más bien gorditón que tiene una sonrisa permanente, pero que subido en la lomita se convierte en uno de los más retadores y poderosos lanzadores de las mayores. Ha salvado 25 de 28 tiene 4 victorias sin derrota, con un impresionante 1.83 de efectividad y 50 ponches en 39 innings lanzados, simplemente impresionante.

El resto del relevo es magnífico Luke Gregerson lanza para 2.84 de efectividad y en 44 innings lanzado ha ponchado a 54, Mike Adams lanza para 2.18, Joe Thatcher lanza para 1.89 en 28 partidos de relevo, mientras que Tim Stauffer lanza para 0.37 en 24 innings lanzados y Edward Mujica lo hace para 2.93 en 43 episodios con 43 abanicados en la misma cantidad de innings.

En resumen el equipo tiene un gran staff de lanzadores, realmente completo, que es capaz de contener a sus adversarios en cada momento del partido, tiene velocidad a la ofensiva, son segundos en la nacional con 76 estafadas y aunque el resto de su ofensiva tiene algunas fallas, poseen lo suficiente para estar en la cuenta al final de la temporada.
