Decorating the tree
In the United States, this tradition goes back to the Revolutionary War, and it is associated with the Hessian mercenaries that were employed by the English. On the other hand, there is proof that this custom was practiced by German settlers in Pennsylvania.
In ancient Scandinavia, there was also an end-of-year celebration centered around a tree leaf that had 12 leaflets representing the twelve months of the year. At the end of the celebration, the leaves were set on fire and placed in a heap resembling a pyramid to make a bonfire in honor of Thor, the god of strength and vitality. This is another pagan tradition that may have evolved into our present day Christmas tree.
