Colors
Although holiday tables are traditionally accented by gold, silver, white, red and green, there is no standard or limit on the use of other color combinations.
Whites and off-whites are always welcomed, as well as a host of others, as long as they match the table's color scheme.
But colors have their own significance and context. Green, for instance, symbolizes hope and represents nature. That is why it was once considered good luck to give certain evergreens, like poinsettias, as gifts. It is the magic color for the onset of the winter solstice. A beckoning of the blooming greenery of spring.
Yellow, on the other hand, is the color of the sun and of ripe wheat, or more exactly a symbol of fertility. It also symbolizes happiness and prosperity, and though it is not widely use during this time of year, we should keep it in mind.
Red is related to life and boundless generosity. It is found in certain elements, like in Santa's suit, that are associated with symbols of selflessness.
Finally, white symbolizes purity, innocence, virtue and faith, as well as light and cleanliness. Since it goes with everything, it is perhaps the best color to use for special combinations. It works very well with golden and silver shades.
