China and flatware
Most china comes with matching underplates. Typically, when the dinner plates have a design or motif, the underplates will be a solid color or vice versa. If your china doesn't come with underplates, you can purchase a silver, silver plated or stainless steel set, which will go very well with just about any kind of china. The main goal of this simple and elegant table item is to accentuate each place setting.
The shape of your plates is another factor to consider, although nowadays you can find them in a wide range of unusual shapes. For the more daring there are rectangular and square plates. They normally come in solid colors like white or black, with a minimalist oriental feel. Classic china is always round, and the same is true for more functional china.
Matching trays, sauce dishes and salad bowls need to be placed in the middle of the table, where all the guests can have access to them.
You can also include matching bread bowls, which are sometimes used with underplates made of different materials and colors than the rest of the plates, to create a nice effect.
Coffee sets take center stage during the dessert portion of the holiday meal. It is customary to use a set plates different from those used at dinner. Colorful cups, saucers and plates are highly recommended.
