Dec' the halls
Speaking of decorations, nothing beats fresh flowers, said Cummins.
"I'm a big fan of fresh florals," he said, which can be set on top of a mantle or used as a centerpiece on the serving table. "They're always the most extravagant and elegant" -- but they can also be the most expensive, he admitted. In that case, there are a number of alternatives that are just as intriguing.
Bowls or topiaries of seasonal fruits and vegetables can be set on the table or placed on a pedestal, Cummins said. A tower of lemons or pomegranates, pears, apples or clementines is popular this year, as well as fresh produce such as artichokes. He suggested picking only one fruit or vegetable, or items of similar color, as single-color themes are hot this year.
"Things that have a nice color and are interesting in terms of texture and shape can be very nice," Cummins said. "Fruits and vegetables are much more economical, magical and less staged (in appearance), and they can be used later." Fresh flowers, on the other hand, serve one purpose then wilt away, he noted.
