The Father Christmas Letters
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973)
J.R.R. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He studied at Oxford and was later named Professor of English Literature at that university, a reason that helps to explain his recurring themes on ancient medieval legend. After serving in World War I, he rose to academic pre-eminence and was soon regarded one of the finest philologists in the world. However, he is most well known as the creator of Middle Earth and author of a classic trilogy of contemporary fantasy literature: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. This work is considered a significant socio-cultural phenomenon, especially among the young.
The work, which dates back to 1994, is based on a selection of illustrated letters that Tolkien wrote every year to his sons as Father Christmas. The collection of letters and drawings reveal Santa's activities when it's not Christmas. They describe a mischievous polar bear, Santa's helper elves, and battles with the bothersome dwarves.
