LITERARY WORKS

Memorable literary works, their origins and characters

The Nutcracker
Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann

Born in Königsberg in 1776, Hoffmann was an influential figure of the Romantic Movement in German literature. Endowed with an imagination he himself considered eccentric, Hoffman dedicated himself to a life of artistic endeavor, both as a composer of music and as a writer. His highly eclectic works are inhabited by fantastic figures and characters that continually intrude on everyday life.

Since its publication in 1816, it has become a universal fairy tale classic. One Christmas Eve, a little girl awaits the arrival of Baby Jesus with her brother. When their parents throw open the doors of the living room, the children are struck with a wonderful vision: a Christmas tree decorated with hundreds of candles and overflowing with the most fantastic presents and delicious candy they have ever seen. The children's godfather has built a fabulous castle where elegant ladies and gentlemen dance. Her brother gets a crafty red fox and a battalion of sword-wielding hussars and silver horses. And the little girl falls in love with the very last soldier crouched meekly beneath the tree: the Nutcracker. The fantastic adventures of this little girl as she parades among dolls and mice in her own imaginative kingdom, combine a very whimsical character with delightful humor laced with a touch of terror.
