Memorable literary works, their origins and characters
Household Stories by the Brothers Grimm
Jakob Ludwig Grimm (1785-1863)
Wilhelm Carl Grimm (1786-1859)
The Brothers Grimm were the eldest sons of a wealthy family with deeply held religious and traditional beliefs. The premature death of their father (an affluent lawyer), and that of their mother a few years later, left the family in a precarious financial position. The brothers eventually became the key intellectual figures of the Romantic Movement in German literature. Their early editions and critical discussions of medieval German literature and folklore earned them international recognition, making them two of the most renowned writers of classic world literature.
Snow White, Cinderella, and Tom Thumb, unforgettable stories and true classics of Western civilization, are cited in the work. The table of contents of the seven editions of this classic work reads like a veritable Who's Who of fairly tales: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Rumpelstikin, Hänsel and Gretel and the Frog King. Dozens of characters - a parade of witches, servants, soldiers, stepmothers, dwarves, giants, wolves, demons - career through its pages. Adapted mainly from oral tradition, the 210 stories of Grimm's collection form an unequalled anthology of fairy tales, fables, folk farces and religious allegories.
