Memorable literary works, their origins and characters
The Seed and the Sower (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence)
Laurens Van der Post (1906- )
South African writer settled in England. Despite his status as a well-recognized figure in British society (he received a knighthood in 1981), his heart remains in Africa and the majority of his writings reflect an intense desire to describe the cultural framework of Africa's many tribes.
The book, originally entitled The Seed and the Sower, is based on his two-year experience in a WWII prisoner-of-war camp. In 1983, the work was adapted to film as the rather bizarre "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence!" which included artists such as David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto (Oscar-winning composer of "The Last Emperor"), Takeshi Kitano, Tom Conti, and Japanese director Nagisha Oshima.
