 HOMEMADE GIFTS
In stores this season, you can find a thousand different gift ideas. Perhaps this year you'd like to give your loved ones a gift from the heart. Here are some ideas you can try at home. Happy crafting!
  Japanase Lampshade
Materials: 1 sheet of parchment paper, 1 pack of wood pieces for maquettes, dry flowers, yarn and glue.
Directions: Cut the parchment sheet into 6 sections of 25 by 18 cm (10 in. by 7.2 in.). Using the dry flowers, make a pattern that you like on one of the pieces and then glue it to the paper. Do the same thing for two other pieces. Place a clean piece of parchment paper over each one of the flowered pieces and glue them together. Cut the wood pieces and make six 28-cm (11.2-in.) strips and six 16-cm (6.4-in.) strips. Make 3 frames using the wood pieces you just cut and place the parchment paper over them. Glue them together. There should be about 3 cm (1.2 in.) of wood sticking out from the bottom of each frame. Knit the three sides together using a fine needle and yarn, in a 45° angle. The three frames should make a triangular lampshade. You can make the lampshade bigger adding more frames. This lampshade is ideal for having dinner out on a patio under candlelight. Place a regular candle inside the lampshade and let it light up the night.

  Marmalade
Ingredients: 1 kg (2 lbs.) of juice oranges, 1 kg (2 lbs). of sugar, and five cups of water.
Directions: Rinse oranges and squeeze juice without draining. Pour in a pot. Pick a third of the best orange rinds and cut them into julienne strips, removing the white part. Put the orange rinds in the blender until they are finely ground. Add the ground rinds to the juice in the pot and add water. Boil for about two hours, making sure to always keep the same amount of liquid in the pot. Once soft, add sugar, mixing well into the hot liquid and set on low heat until boil. This takes approximately 45 minutes. The marmalade is ready when it has a golden caramel-like color. Spoon some onto a saucer to check if it is runny. If runny, put back on stove until it reaches desired consistency. This marmalade doesn't need preservatives and doesn't go bad. You can add a little scent after you remove it from the stove with two tablespoons of whisky. Mix briskly.
