ZANZIBAR (TANZANIA)
Looking for an exotic and unusual
place to greet the New Millennium in an original and
adventurous way? Zanzibar is one of the most beautiful
destinations in the world for experiencing an exotic
lifestyle. An island where mystery and ancient stories
about explorers, safaris and adventures in the wilds
of nature are alive in every corner of its city.
UNIQUE CELEBRATION
Zanzibar has prepared a great street celebration
to greet the New Millennium. As the fireworks light up
the parade of indigenous bands playing music, the entire
population of the island will be celebrating until dawn.
Few events are more original or exotic.
TIPS
The island of Zanzibar, part of the Republic
of Tanzania, is located in southwest Africa. In spite
of its small size, Zanzibar has experienced a number
of armed conflicts throughout its history. It was once
a desirable target for the Bantus, British, Egyptian,
Portuguese and Arabians among others, because of its
strategic location, the wealth of its valuable resources,
such as gold, ivory and ebony, its excellent climate
and its fertile lands. The island remained a key outpost
on the route through the Indian Ocean to Arabia and
India, and it earned a dubious distinction as an important
repository for slave trade.
COMMUNE
WITH NATURE
The island is an ecological paradise, teeming with indigenous
species and protected reserves, and it maintains a fascinating
agricultural tradition.
The narrow streets, tunnels, balconies and bazaars that
make up the heart of the city evoke an air of uniqueness.
SITES
OF INTEREST
The People's Palace Museum:
Contains an interesting collection of items from colonial
times, as well as artifacts dating back to the voyages
of the sultans.
Portuguese Fort:
It is the oldest structure in the city, currently serving
as a backdrop for outdoor concerts, and certain to play
an important part in the great millennium celebration.
The old slave market: Now an Anglican church.
The Hammamni: Guided
tours available for this one-time Turkish bath.
Africa House: The
former English club is a useful source of information
about trips and tours.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Although the island is home to a number of interesting
sites, one must bear in mind that it is small and there
aren't any spectacular attractions. The traveler who
comes to this exotic paradise must be aware of this
to be able to enjoy some unforgettable moments experiencing
the pleasures of daily life in the enrapturing atmosphere
of the island: having a refreshing drink in one of the
local establishments, contemplating the scenery, or
admiring the exotic baobab trees can be as rewarding
an experience as visiting a museum.
As for the city's infrastructure, it must be remembered
that although Zanzibar is poor, it is inhabited by real
people who live modestly and discreetly. Nevertheless,
they display genuine hospitality toward visitors, making
it a good idea to have someone along who speaks Swahili.
You can travel the island by car, public bus or even
bicycle; a good map will eliminate any possibility of
getting lost. One interesting trip you make is along
the northern stretch of the island of Urguja, where
you can visit beaches, Portuguese ruins and palatial
outposts of the sultans.
