THINGS TO SEE AND DO NEARBY
Cancun, the center of the most important tourist area
in Mexico, didn't exist until 25 years ago. It was created
practically from thin air, built by the Mexican government
to relieve the flood of visitors to Acapulco, which
couldn't handle one more tourist.
For that reason, visitors will not find any history
recorded here or monuments to fix on photographs or
videotapes. But they will find an entertainment complex
that has a little bit of everything.
Cancun is a tongue of sand 23 kilometers long, with
two beautiful interior lagoons. The hotel zone occupies
the entire length of the beaches.
The city center is on solid ground with many interesting
places for visitors, such as Tulum avenue, where there
are quite a few very pleasant restaurants and bars.
The most original restaurant in Cancun is "Bogart's,"
a recreation of "Rick's Café" in the movie "Casablanca."
The meat and seafood are excellent. Also very noteworthy
is "El Mexicano," which offers excellent local cuisine.
A few kilometers to the north of the city is Puerto
Juárez, which, up until a few years ago, was the only
town in the region. The ferry to the Isle of Women leaves
from there. In the opposite direction lie the Mayan
ruins of Tulum, some 129 kilometers to the south. You
can also make day trips to the ruins of Chichén and
Itzá, or to the towns of Puerto Morelos and Cozumel.
