THINGS TO SEE AND DO NEARBY
London, like Paris, New York or Amsterdam, offers
so many possibilities to the visitor, that the best
thing to do on your first visit to the city is to choose
what you want to see and do based on your own likes
and preferences.
In any case, we recommend here the obligatory visits,
such as the Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben,
buildings that are the focus of the history of the Empire.
The National Gallery is the Museum of Art par excellence,
and the British Museum is the large general museum,
as large and impressive as the Louvre and boasting half
of ancient Egypt safe within its walls (it is said that
there are more Egyptian objects in Britain than in the
El Cairo museum).
And you can't leave London without seeing the Tower
of London and the Tower Bridge, or sitting next to the
fountain of Eros in Piccadilly Circus, or visiting Oxford
Street or strolling past Buckingham Palace. Once you've
made the basic tourist rounds, we recommend going for
a stroll through Chelsea, the most fashionable neighborhood
in London today, or having a beer in any of the Soho
pubs.
They say that in London it's not easy to get a good
meal, but that's history; in the last few years, English
cooking has undergone radical changes, and there are
quite a few good restaurants for visitors to try. We
can especially recommend Rules, in Maiden Lane, the
oldest restaurant in London, which offers the best in
regional British fare; Bibendun, in Michelin House,
one of the most modern in the city, offers quite imaginative
cuisine; and Le Gavroche, in Upper Brook Street, offers
the best French cuisine in London.
