SEYCHELLES
For those seeking the classic tropical paradise in the
middle of nowhere, this is it. The beaches of Seychelles
are flanked with palm trees and exotic wild vegetation.
The ocean is warm and transparent, as in the fantasy of
any diver or snorkel fanatic.
On the southern side of the island, the beaches are more
serene and spectacular than the ones found in the northern
tip, but the best spots for swimming and snorkeling are
located in Ile Souris, on the east coast. The most remote
part of this tiny island is in the east, in Anse Soleil
and Anse Petite. You'll need a jeep to get to these destinations,
but it is worthwhile.
The largest concentration of palm trees is in Vellée de
Mai, in the island of Praslin. The thick foliage in the
prehistoric forests of this valley let the sunrays through
to create a golden green aura all around. Exotic plants,
like wild pineapple and coffee, also embellish this paradise,
home to the black parrot. Anse Lazio is the best beach
in Praslin, with soft white sand and turquoise water that
make it the ideal place for snorkeling.
Turtles, sea birds and other rare endangered species live
in the Cousin Island, a natural reserve for more than
thirty years. Aside from the turtles, one can also muse
at the granite sculptures of Curieuse Island, an official
natural park. These two islands can only be accessed with
a guided tour.
Silhouette is a mysterious island, rich with legends about
pirates and treasures hidden in caves and grottos. At
sun down, one can see a dark silhouette cutting across
the sepia colored sky. During the tour of the carnivore
plants, in Mont Pot a Eau, be careful not to step on caterpillars,
snails and other unsuspecting insects. This island can
only be reached by helicopter or boat.
Windsurfing and fishing are perfect sports during the
windy season in these islands, generally during May and
October. Some isles are better during monsoon season and
others in the summer time, the windy season.
Prices are considerably higher in December, January, July
and August when the influx of tourists is more numerous.
Therefore, spending the holidays in the Seychelles Islands
is not exactly cheap, but it is possible to make it on
a $100 per day budget, sea food and scuba gear included.
For those who decide to go:
Visa: Not required for most travelers, but you'll need
to show proof of having a round trip ticket, lodging reservations
and enough money for your stay.
