Ruby Ann Wallace nació en Cleveland , Ohio un 27 de octubre de 1924.

Esta talentosísima actriz comenzó su carrera profesional como miembro del American Negro Theatre.

Ruby Dee dio sus primeros pasos en Broadway con “South Pacific” y fue premiada con un Obie por su interpretación en “Boesman and Lena” y con un Premio Drama Desk por “Wedding Band”.

Ruby Dee ganó un Emmy en 1991 por “Decoration Day” y fue nominada en diferentes oportunidades por sus actuaciones en “The Nurses”, “Raíces”, “Lincoln”, “Playas de China” y “Evening Shade”.

Se licenció en la Universidad de Hunter y posteriormente estudió con Paul Mann, Lloyd Richards y Morris Carnovsky.

Ruby Dee ha escrito dos libros infantiles, Tower to Heaven y Two Ways to Count to Ten y un libro de poesías y relatos, My One Good Nerve. Además ha ganado el Premio Audie a la Mejor Narración Femenina por Their Eyes Were Watching God. También , junto a su marido, Ossie Davis , publicaron una biografía de ellos ‘With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together’.
