Síntesis:
La película se centra en los primeros años profesionales de Hughes, un magnate de la aviación y cineasta en sus ratos libres. En 1924, a los 19 años, sucede a su fallecido padre en el negocio familiar de perforadoras industriales.
Poco después entra en el mundo del cine donde produjo Hell's Angels y Scarface, y tuvo relaciones con Ava Gardner, Katharine Hepburn y Jean Harlow. Más tarde se interesa por la industria cervecera, y sobretodo, por la aviación, que le llevó a los 33 años a dar la vuelta al mundo en un aparato de su invención.
The aviator termina en 1948 cuando Hughes vuelve al mundo del cine con la compra de R.K.O., después de ser, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, suministrador de armamento para el ejército.
