Herb Sosa
Heriberto Sosa is a founding member of, and currently serves as Director of Unity Coalition/Coalicion Unida (UC), Florida's leading Latino/Hispanic gay civil-rights nonprofit initiative, offering leadership on issues that concern Latino/Hispanic LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) and other minority groups.
Information about the "Activist of the Year"
Under Sosa’s leadership, UC has successfully provided training workshops to the community on issues of political & social empowerment; increased Latino voter awareness and turnout to defend the Human Rights Ordinance in South Florida; developed an annual Toy Drive assisting needy children & those living with HIV/AIDS in Florida and the Caribbean.
Established UC as Liaison with local police for all issues involving Latino LGBT crimes; co-chaired a network of local and national LGBT orgs. to establish a national organization, including hosting the first ever LGBT leadership summit in Miami; hosted various community events that provided direct access to the State Attorney, County Mayor and many others to the LGBT community & its issues/needs.
In 2002 Sosa became co-founder and Editor in Chief of Ambiente Magazine (www.ambiente.us), a bilingual Hispanic LGBT publication produced monthly, offered free of charge to its readers and distributed electronically around the globe.
Mr. Sosa brings over 20 years of corporate and not-for-profit leadership experience in the community.
In January 2004, Herb Sosa was named one of Tentaciones Magazines Top Ten Latina/o activists in the U.S., and in 2005 was named one of OUT magazines Top 100 LGBT Activists and featured on LOGO TV.
