Jesus Chairez was president of Dallas' first GLBT Latino activist group the Gay & Lesbian Hispanic Coalition de Dallas. Chairez is literally referred to as the godfather to Dallas-Fort Worth LGBT Latino movement.
Information about the "Activist of the Year"
Chairez produced and hosted USA's first 2-hour bilingual Latino radio show Sin Fronteras on community radio KNON 89.FM from July 4, 1993 to July 4, 2005. Chairez interviewed many GLBT Latino leaders, politicians and artists on Sin Fronteras that would have never gotten visibility in Dallas' conservative market. Though Chairez retired from radio he currently serves the only gay Latino on the Board of Directors on KNON 89.3 FM.
Chairez is currently a freelance journalist/photojournalist and opinion writer. His articles and Opinions have appeared in the Dallas Voice, the Chicago Free Press and with Opinions in The Dallas Morning News.
Chairez' work in radio and print media has encouraged many young GLBT Latino activists to pursue activist work in Dallas Forth Worth community. Chairez is literally referred to as the godfather to Dallas-Fort Worth LGBT Latino movement. And he currently blogs as a Lucha Libre persona, Santo Gay on Sí Soy Gay.
Though Chairez is Dallas native, he is in the process of moving to Mexico City.
