SOCCER WORLD CUP

FIFA Word Cup of Soccer

There is no doubt that the essence of soccer changed in 1930 with the first World Cup. This was the year in which this sport became of great importance at an global level once the Frenchman Jules Rimet, president of FIFA (International Soccer Federation Association), created the first World Cup competition.

As time passed, all the countries of the world organized themselves and started fighting for a space at the World Cup which occurs every four years. Uruguay was the first champion of the World Cup.

To date, the Brazilian team has won the most World Cups (a total of five), followed by Germany and Italy who have won three times. This is followed by Uruguay and Argentina which have won two World Cups and England and France which have won one.

Some of the best players of this disciplined sport have come out of this global championship level. Among the most distinguished is the Frenchman forward Just Fontaine, who holds the record of 13 goals during a World Cup (Sweden, 1958) and Gerd Müeller, a German player who scored a significant total of 14 goals, becoming the best striker in World Cup history.

Just as we have seen outstanding players come out the World Cup, we have also seen excellent teams do the same. Although some of these teams have not achieved the highest award for this competition, they have remained forever engraved in the minds of the lovers of this sport.

Just as Puskas’ Hungary team of 1954, the “Mechanical Orange” of Cruyff, the van Der Kerkoff Brothers of 1974 and Boniek and Lato of Poland from 1978 till 1982, among others, these have been a reference point of what a squadron team of players should demonstrate at a World Cup competition.

In order to make the World Cup and its meaning renowned worldwide, some changes were made for the better during the 21st century. Japan and South Korea organized themselves well and when they reached the semifinals, this left much to be said for the “Red Tide”.

Brazil was the World Cup champion and has constituted itself as the true mechanism for winning the World Cup championships of soccer.
